Vote for Messi

We're asking Goal readers to vote for their best XI of the 2015-16 season up to now, with the Barcelona superstar edging out Riyad Mahrez despite a lengthy injury absence
Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been voted into Goal readers' team of the season so far.

The Argentine sensation may have missed almost two months of the campaign with a knee injury, but has scored or assisted nine goals in eight games in the Champions League and La Liga since returning to action in November.

Messi had an incredible 2015 - and will be looking to kick-start 2016 with the Balon d'Or, for which he is the favourite - with the recent Club World Cup victory being his fifth trophy of the year.

He picked up the lion's share of the vote, with 6,359 (41 per cent) choosing the Barca star as the best right-sided forward of the year so far, though he had to beat off fierce competition from Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian winger has been in incredible form this season for high-flying Leicester City and duly picked up 25% of the vote, with Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller (12%) rounding off the top three.
